Below is a look at the 20 best and worst performing ETFs (non-leveraged) over the last week. Gold-exposed stocks jumped, while biotech stocks continued steady gains. Among the worst performers were a number of the financial sector stocks, including KBE Banks and IYG Financial Services, IAI Broker Dealers, and KCE Capital Markets. Multiple Asian exposures were ranked high on top performers, while European exposures faltered, with Italy falling the most.

Biotech continues to trade well, as do small caps and small cap growth stocks. IWC (Microcaps) is also probably a good indicator of where market price action has been lately with the smallest (and usually most speculative) names up a healthy 2.5% over the past week. Oil-exposed stocks like XES or OIH feature prominently in the list of worst performers, as does hedged Japanese exposure which has gotten hit hard on combined USDJPY and Nikkei selloffs over the last few days. A number of other EMs have also underperformed over the past week.

Gold has finally fallen off the top of the worst performers list, which is instead populated by EMs and the UK where a 2-day swoon in GBPUSD has hurt stocks traded in GBP. Natural gas is up a frankly astounding 10.77% over the last five days, with India and Metals & Mining also performing well despite weakness in iron ore, steel, and copper markets. Another unlikely suspect in the top 20: retail. After hand-wringing galore a few weeks ago on a slate of poor earnings from retailers, XRT has rallied 3% over the last week, just outside our top 10 best performing ETFs over that period.

Chinese shares rallied today on hopes that MSCI would include onshore Chinese listings in its global indices. Biotech continues to trade well over the last few days as do mid-cap and small-cap growth stocks. Gold remains the most painful trade at the moment with the 7 worst performing ETFs we track over the last week all involving some kind of gold exposure. Finally, notable: the two most overbought ETFs we track are both short volatility products that are basically inverse VIX funds.

India has surged as the SENSEX rose more than 1% each of the last two sessions while gold miners and the metal itself continue to underperform. Keep an eye on China – Hong Kong-listed H-shares for Chinese companies have made a run here, while other EMs have also rebounded over the last few days.

Semis continue to lead with EM participation getting broader. Developed markets have also been quite strong as European megacaps in the Stoxx 50 make our best performers list along with Italy and France. Underperformers include bond funds, believe it or not, despite the +2 bps performance of TLT in the last week. Gold and other commodities, however, lead the negative readings over the past five days of performance with MLPs also starting to give up performance.
