ETF Trends: Hedge – 6/13/16

Below is a list of the 20 best and 20 worst performing ETFs over the last week.  Precious metals continue to rally, as do Treasuries with EDV and TLT breaking out over the last few days.  Other carry plays like REITs and Utilities have also outperformed along with a rallying Japanese yen.  European stocks continue to underperform while volatile biotech is now a laggard.  Solar stocks have also lagged significantly while all manner of international stocks have gotten weighed down by currency weakness and poor performance from Europe.

ETF Trends: US Indices & Styles – 6/10/16

Your morning cup got a bit more expensive this past week with an ETF tracking coffee bean futures the best performer. Natural gas was also a good return, along with Silver, Gold, and much of the Energy complex. European ETFs were the worst performers across the board as EURUSD rolled over again and global equity markets were weakest in the Eurozone. Solar stocks have also been grim over the past week.

ETF Trends: International – 6/9/16

Below is our daily list of the twenty best and twenty worst performing ETFs over the last five trading days.  The list of best performers is dominated by natural resources, led by gold and oil exposures.  Steel, Silver, and Precious Metals also rank highly.  Biotech stocks have plummeted in value, topping the list of worst performers, a sharp contrast from a week ago when they led the top performers. The exposures for emerging Latin America, Middle East & Africa, and Europe continued to perform strongly.  Banking related stocks continue to flounder.  Retail exposures have also performed poorly as have hedged European and Japanese exposures.

ETF Trends: Fixed Income, Currencies, and Commodities – 6/8/16

Volatile gold stocks have jumped the entire spectrum from some of the worst performers to some of the best in a few short days. Coffee and other commodity exposures have also ripped while banks lead the list of losers along with the USD and preferred shares.

ETF Trends: US Sectors & Groups – 6/7/16

Below is our daily list of the twenty best and twenty worst performing ETFs over the last five trading days.  Hedged European and Japanese indexes continue to perform poorly as the USD remains strong.  Eight of the top 12 performers are related to natural resources, a group which includes gold, gas, oil, and steel stocks in addition to coffee.  NASDAQ Biotech flipped from the top performer list to the worst performer list but remains marginally positive.  Broad bond market and Treasury exposures have underperformed but are mostly still positive or neutral.  Financial sector stocks continue to struggle with Capital Markets, Financial Services, Banks, and Financials all in the red as interest rates at the front end of the curve decline on a more dovish Fed.  Latin America, Emerging Latin America, and Brazil are among the top performing regional ETFs.

ETF Trends: Hedge – 6/6/16

Below is our daily list of the twenty best and twenty worst performing ETFs over the last five trading days.  Gold ranked among the top performers again while oil exposures remained among the worst performers.  Asian stocks continued to do well, with the exception of hedged Japanese exposure which came in atop the worst performers.  It’s notable that thanks to the huge dollar selloff after Friday’s poor jobs print, currency hedges in DXJ and HEDJ worked the “wrong way”; stocks didn’t move much in Europe and Japan but the EUR and JPY surged versus USD, making the hedges lose while the underlying was close to flat.  Biotech remained strong, and European exposures still ranked poorly.  Financial sector stocks were stuck among the worst performers.
