Gold miners continue to slowly recover from their catastrophic selloff of the last couple months, while Brazil, the Philippines, and South Africa have all gained in the past week. On the loosing side of the ledger, biotech continues to decline along with US cyclicals like Retail, Homebuilders, and small cap growth stocks.

Biotech continues to get hit hard, while a number of oil-related names have also gotten hit fairly hard over the last week or so. SEK has been the worst performing currency of those that trade as ETFs, while Banks have lagged thanks to a pause in yield curve steepening and bond selling. On the plus side, Brazil continues to surge while gold has had a nice recovery off recent lows, benefiting miners. Rate rallies (lower yields) have granted some reprieve for REITs and Utilities while EM has done fairly well on a country level.

Biotechs continue to slide, as does South Africa where confidence in the current government continues to slide. Interestingly, DBV is one of the best performing ETFs we track over the past five days. The ETF takes long and short positions in FX futures based on interest rate differentials, and typically doesn’t have much volatility. The USD has also performed well, while Utilities have outperformed despite mixed returns in the bond market recently.

Natural gas has lost out to coffee as the top performer of the past week. Mortgage-related stocks, Mexico, Brazil, and Utilities have also taken off. On the losing side of the equation, XBI and IBB were the worst performers on the weak with Metals, Semis, a number of country ETFs, and Pharma also underperforming.

Natural gas continues to rally, up over 8% in the last week for the UNG ETF (we discussed nat gas in The Closer last night). Volatile gold miners have also turned around, with GDXJ and GDX the third and fourth strongest ETFs over the last five days. Following the Bank of Korea last night, South Korean won dropped 1% (weak Chinese data also a factor) helping to push EWY down 5% over the past week; the brutal performance of Samsung following its phone fires is of course another question.

Natural gas cares little for a surging USD (the third-best performing ETF we track over the past week) and neither does coffee or emerging countries in the Americas. Oil has also held up, along with steel. Biotech has gotten absolutely crushed in the last few days, possibly a market signal that Democrat Hilary Clinton is getting closer to a successful White House bid. Other EM names have underperformed badly along with gold miners and anything related to the UK.
