ETF Trends: US Sectors & Groups – 10/27/16

While headline indices haven’t plunged, breadth withing US equity ETFs is starting to decline notably. As shown, of all the ETFs we track, only 14 are up more than 1% over the past week. In contrast, all of the bottom 20 are down over 2.4%. 30 of the 52 US Sector & Group ETFs we track are in downtrends, with only 15 of the 52 in uptrends. While the decline in breadth isn’t anything apocalyptic, we think it’s a risk factor that should be kept in mind for US equity longs.

ETF Trends: Hedge – 10/26/16

It’s a bit of a mixed bag in terms of recent ETF performance with coffee the biggest gainer over the past week and industrial commodities also performing well but some odd ducks like mortgage real estate companies, Brazil, JPY-hedged Japanese equities, and Spain also in the list of the biggest gains over the past week. Natural gas continues to move lower off of recent highs ahead of inventory tomorrow, while the crude market has helped push down high-beta equities that service producing companies. A few Asian EM names, homebuilders, and a couple of other themes round out the worst performers list.

ETF Trends: US Indices & Styles – 10/25/16

Steel producers retain their place as the best performers over the last five days, while coffee has also seen a fairly significant rally over the past week. Other miners, like gold miners, have performed well, while banks have been a beneficiary of higher interest rates. South Africa, Brazil, Poland, and Turkey have led emerging markets higher over the last give sessions. On the other side of the performance slate, natural gas continues to decline, by far the worst performer in the ETFs we track. Homebuilders have also been hit very hard relative to the rest of the ETF universe over the last few days.

ETF Trends: Fixed Income, Currencies, and Commodities – 10/24/16

Foreign currencies have suffered mightily over the past week as the dollar has made new multi-month highs on a broad basis. Low volatility stocks have also suffered. On the winning side of the equation, steel producers have surged over the past few days, helped today by stronger Flash Markit PMIs for Japan, Europe and the US. EM equities have also outperformed over the past week along with banks.

ETF Trends: International – 10/21/16

Anything metals-related – gold producers, steelmakers, and metals and mining – rallied significantly over the past week. Many emerging markets also climbed, while natural gas, the insurance industry, and New Zealand lead to the downside.

ETF Trends: US Sectors & Groups – 10/20/16

In something of a flip, natural gas has been down the most over the past week and junior gold miners have been up the most – a reversal of what was true for several weeks. South Africa, the Philippines, and Brazil have all continued to rally while biotechs have lead the charge lower. Other US sector or group exposures have also continued to underperform and almost half of the 52 ETFs in our Sectors & Groups category are in downtrends as of today.
