ETF Trends: International – 11/4/16

Metals continue to dominate the best performers list with gold leading the way. Pound sterling has been the strongest major currency in the world over the last few days, with yen and Swiss franc also gaining. Broadly speaking, the dollar has been weak as the EUR, AUD, and SEK all sit on top of the best performers list as well, along with UDN. On the other side of the slate, Energy has crashed lower over the last few sessions along with MLPs and Latin American.

ETF Trends: US Sectors & Groups – 11/3/16

Gold miners and anything metallic continues to outperform; 9 of the top 10 performers from our list are somehow involved in metals. With the move lower in equity markets lately, JPY, CHF, and EUR have outperformed while the GBP got a solid rally after a decision by the UK’s High Court to require an act of Parliament before Brexit. Oil-related stocks have plunged, and there are a number of other brutal performances as well; health care, Brazil, and Mexico all stand out.

ETF Trends: Hedge – 11/2/16

With oil inventories coming in with their biggest week-over-week gain in history today (+14mm barrels) WTI has gotten absolutely smoked, down over 10% from recent highs. The Energy sector has taken a massive hit over the past week and the worst performers list is littered with those names. The Mexican peso has made new lows thanks to event risk around the US election, helping EWW pop up among the worst performers. Precious metals dominate the best performers list, with industrial metals also faring well. Despite the risk-off tone in many markets the dollar is down notably WoW, with the Japanese yen getting more of a risk-off gain.

ETF Trends: US Indices & Styles – 11/1/16

Previous metals have ripped over the last couple of days, while steel and other industrial metals have also risen notably. Breadth within the US equity market continues to look poor with numerous indices and sectors in significant downtrends. Oil at recent lows hasn’t helped, and health care industry indices continue to plunge, with pharma and biotech leading the way. Bond selloffs have also hurt REITs and other real estate-related names.

ETF Trends: Fixed Income, Currencies, and Commodities – 10/31/16

We once again point out that despite some strong gains over the past week for a few ETFs (base metals and coffee stand out), very few ETFs of the more than 200 we track are up over the last five sessions, with the 20th best performer up only 20 bps. There are lots of losses though. With oil sliding off recent highs, high-beta Energy names are getting smoked, and the health care industry has a bundle of underperformers as well.

ETF Trends: International – 10/28/16

With oil at multi-week lows, Energy-related ETFs are common in our list of worst performers. Natural gas, solar power, and biotech have also underperformed recently as have a number of Health Care sub-indices. Coffee, industrial metals, agriculture, and a few European companies are the best performers. Euro and Swiss franc have performed okay as has gold. Financials are getting a benefit from steepening yield curves.
