ETF Trends: US Sectors & Groups – 12/5/16

Energy, steel, and banks continue to outperform while Italy is the best performing country ETF of the past week – a surprising outcome given the vote against government reform in the referendum held by Italy over the weekend. Laggards include coffee, Brazil, Turkey, and rate sensitive US Utilities along with other bond proxies and gold.

ETF Trends: Hedge – 12/2/16

Oil is the best-performing global asset class over the last week, up over 10% using ETFs USO and DBO as proxies. Energy stocks, especially high-beta oil service ETFs, have also benefited significantly. Broad commodity indices have also done well with natural gas, gold, and other energy performing well. Over the last week, coffee is the worst performer while Biotech, Semis, and other Nasdaq components have underperformed. Big-cap tech in general has been weak, as have momentum stocks.

ETF Trends: US Indices & Styles – 12/1/16

Natural gas, crude oil, and anything related to Energy has surged over the last few days thanks to OPEC’s decision to cut output. Italy, Singapore, and gold miners have also performed pretty well while banks are up over 2% over the past couple of weeks. Performing poorly: biotechs, semis (a recent leader) and growth stocks. Micro Caps (which exploded higher after the election) have also performed fairly poorly over the last few days.

ETF Trends: International – 11/29/16

Oil plunged today ahead of tomorrow’s OPEC announcement, with markets positioning for no agreement on production cuts by the cartel. Exploration and production companies, MLPs, and other related ETFs litter the list of the worst performers over the past week, with biotech and gold also performing poorly. On the other side of the coin natural gas has surged higher over the last few days while base metals, steel, China, and India have performed well. Also sneaking back some performance: REITs, which had gotten absolutely smashed along with bonds following the US election.

ETF Trends: US Sectors & Groups – 11/28/16

Metals and steel have come surging back over the past week after a brief selloff, with most industrial metals making new highs in the last few days. EMs like South Africa, Brazil, and China have also rallied on weakening USD price action. The weaker performances over the last few days have also been from EM, however, while gold, biotech, and MLPs have delivered significant underperformance in the past week.

ETF Trends: Hedge – 11/23/16

Metals and steel-related ETFs have performed well over the last few days, after pausing briefly last week. Energy also continues to perform well ahead of EIA data on the petroleum market today. Duration continues to underperform with EDV, TLT, and VCLT all on the list of worst performers. Parts of Health Care also continue to underperform as do solar stocks and gold.
