The S&P 500 has gained an average of 0.02% on all trading days so far this year, but the index has only been up on 47% of 2015’s trading days.  Below is a breakdown of market performance by weekday so far this year.

If it weren’t for Thursdays, market bulls would have a serious problem.  As shown, the index has averaged a gain of 0.22% on Thursdays with gains on the day 58% of the time.  The only other weekday that has averaged a gain this year is Monday, which is at +0.05% and positive returns 52% of the time.  Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays have all averaged declines, with Tuesdays registering the biggest loss at -0.11%.  And Fridays have seen the smallest number of up days at just 40%.  The trade this year: buy at the close on Friday, sell at the close on Monday, buy at the close on Wednesday, and sell at the close on Thursday.  Easy enough, right?
