Below is a pie chart showing S&P 500 sector weightings as they currently stand.  As shown, Technology is the largest sector of the market — making up more than 20% of the index.  Financials is second largest at 16.15%, followed by Health Care at 14.43%, Consumer Discretionary at 13.09, and Industrials at 10.30%.  The remaining five sectors all have weightings under 10%.  Consumer Staples is at 9.95%, Energy is at 7.29%, Utilities is at 3.07%, Materials is at 2.93%, and Telecom brings up the rear at 2.35%.  The pie chart below paints a static picture, and it’s shifts in sector weightings over time that tell the whole story.
