We like to track sales of pickup trucks as they are often a sign of strength or weakness in the small business and construction sectors. These types of businesses are the most common users of these vehicles, so sales of trucks provide a good barometer for how these industries are doing. Based on this idea, both appear to be doing just fine. In the September sales release from Ford Thursday morning, total sales of F-Series trucks increased by more than 16% relative to last September. Part of this increase may be due to the late Labor Day weekend, but regardless of that one holiday weekend, September sales of F-Series trucks hit their highest level (69,651) since September 2006.
Total YTD sales of F-Series trucks are now at their highest level since 2006 as well. Last year was the first time since 2009 that total YTD sales of F-series trucks for the first three quarters of the year fell versus the prior year. After this past September’s strong showing, though, sales are now back on the positive side of the ledger on a year/year basis.
